'Australia'

Macka hosted many crew members and some of the stars of 'Austrailia' including Hugh Jackman and Jack Thompson during filming. Standing tall and proud alongside Macka's camp is the mighty House Roof Hill, the magical location of the 'Faraway Downs' Homestead built for the movie 'Australia'. Towering some 381 metres (1257 feet) over the landscape, House Roof Hill is easily recognisable the entire length of the Lower Ord River

KIMBERLEY ADVENTURE all the way

Mad keen fishermen are not the only ones to discover the closely guarded secret fishing spot, Macka’s Barra Camp in Kununurra - WA.

The highly anticipated Baz Luhrmann epic feature film ‘Australia’ centres on an English aristocrat in the 1930’s played by Nicole Kidman, who comes to northern Australia to sell a cattle property.  One scene, a homestead set was shot in the wild open spaces of Western Australia at Carlton Hill, 100 km west of Kununurra and only 4 km from Macka’s Barra Camp and is just another hook to visit one of the region’s most authentic experiences,” said owner of Macka’s Barra Camp Andrew McEwen.

McEwen said now that shorter holidays have become increasingly popular and airline availability into Kununurra is only one hour from Darwin, domestic and international visitors have increased.  We feel confident that the excitement of a major Hollywood studio choosing to film “Australia” just down the road will be an added incentive for more visitors to explore real Australian icon experiences like fishing at an authentic ‘Barra Camp’.

Tourists and corporate visitors are drawn to the spectacular flora and fauna of Western Australia’s Kimberley region which is why Macka’s Barra Camp combines interactivity with a wildlife focus with salt water Barra fishing, croc spotting, birdlife identification and sighting the ancient and spectacular Kimberley Boab tree as part of a unique Australian experience.

The permanent barra camp is located on the meandering Lower Ord River with its abundant wildlife. Red sunset hues reflect in the surrounding Kimberley ranges, a magnificent backdrop to the private camping facilities that plays host to both fully guided fishing trails to customised stays from 1 to 7 days all-inclusive tailored camp safari packages.

“Barramundi is recognised as the premier sport fish and Saltwater Barramundi are generally bigger, fight harder and taste better than the freshwater variety,” he continued.

“Through the release of new packages we are targeting business tourism to allow small groups of corporates, incentive or team building options.  Macka’s Barra Camp offers an outstanding destination by anyone’s measure when it comes to natural surroundings, perfect climate and things to see and do,” McEwen continued.

Packages include accommodation in cabin or safari-tent facilities, cooked breakfast, lunch, evening meals morning and afternoon tea, all fishing tackle in the customised, spacious 6 metre vessels and expert guides to maximise success.

From humble beginnings over 10 years ago, founder Andrew McEwen built on his local knowledge of the elusive mangrove feeding sites of Western Australia‘s wild salt water Barramundi to develop a close and personal encounter for small group fishing trips to encounter first-hand the thrill of the chase.

Situated high on a picturesque bend on the river this is quality camping with the purpose built camp site featuring 240 volt power, flushing toilets, hot water, fridges/freezers, ice machine, washing machine and a kitchen that boasts tantalising regional cuisine.

“Satisfaction with the friendliness and proficiency of our trained river fishing guides and the natural beauty of the Kimberley landscape has encouraged us to broaden our packages to tailor to the needs of our clients both tourists and business tourism,” Andrew said.
